From the writer and director of SLUT, comes a new play exploring the impact of rape culture on the lives of young men. In the weeks leading up to prom, friendships will be put to the test…because Andrew must be gay, Marcus knocked-up his girl, Nick’s a little too addicted to fetish porn, Derek’s falling in love with Kelsey, and Evan downed a handful of pills and pushed a hook-up too far. Hey, it’s high school. Time to “man-up,” right?

Written and directed by Katie Cappiello, in collaboration with NYC & NJ high school students, Now That We’re Men explores sex, friendship, hook-up culture, porn, masculinity and growing up “guy” in today’s culture. Featuring the 14-18 year-old boys of The Arts Effect. 40 minute performance, followed by a 30 minute talkback with the actors and Katie Cappiello.
Directed by Charlotte Arnoux and written by the 11-13 year-old members of The Arts Effect All-Girl Jr. Theater Company, THOT on the Playground explores dress code dilemas, truth or dare, rape jokes at the lunch table, and the 12-year-old THOT Patrol– and dares to ask, “Why is growing breasts slutty?!” 40 minute performance followed by a 30 minute talkback with the actors and Katie Cappiello and Meg McInerney, founding directors of The Arts Effect and creators of SLUT: The Play.

The play is called Slut and it deals with the issue and the question at the same time. What is a Slut….why are young teenage girls Slutted. Why when a girl calls Rape… they question her veracity….she becomes a Slut in the eyes of her family, friends and community. Why are boys never sluts? Boys are expected to behave like boys…..Girls are expected to comply. The play opens up a pandoras box on the subject of teenage sexuality and how the rules apply differently to both sexes.
Missoula, MT UM Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program and UM Student Advocacy Resource Council (SARC) present SLUT The Play, a one-act play written by playwright and activist Katie Cappiello and developed at The Arts Effect NYC, and innovative theatre arts school for teens in New York City. The Missoula production is directed by UM graduate Hillary Sea Bard, and is cast entirely with teen actors from local Missoula high schools.
